Greetings Anglers! Welcome back to the Agua Boa Amazon Lodge Fishing Report. This week’s edition covers the week of January 26th- February 2nd. It was another great week here at the Agua Boa full of fish, fun and even a little bit of cachaca was consumed. Over the years we have been lucky to host many great groups here at the Agua Boa Amazon Lodge. However, we have never had a group that has been so “vein.” Among our group of doctor anglers, four of them were vascular surgeons. As always throughout our reporting we like to thank all the people that help make our operation a success, especially the many booking agents that recommend us to their clientele. Last weeks group was brought to us by two fantastic agents Frontiers and Yellow Dog. Both agencies have their niche in the fly-fishing world and fill them well providing great service to their customers. Frontiers has been sending people fishing all over the world since the 1970’s and last week we were lucky enough to host veteran angler Richard Emens, who has been fishing exclusively through Frontiers since 1976. Like all savy anglers Richard believes in having luck on his side. So naturally he has a lucky hat, that has been helping him land trophy fish since 1974. Technical Tip. Hey folks, we hate to be redundant, but we really want to make a point this week in our technical tip segment. This week we feel like we need to once again cover, the curse of standing on your line. For example, if you would like to increase your chances seeing a Pirarucu in the shallows ready to pounce on a fly, stand on your line. If you would like to decrease the life of your fly line, just stand on it, a lot. Get the picture?
OK, here’s the explanation. Over the years we have covered the subject of foot wear in our report and there are a variety of options. For jungle trails and wading, Keens or Simms sandals are great options. Around the lodge flip-flops are perfect. However, in the boat the best option is a pair of good old-fashioned gym socks. Why? They keep the bugs and sun off your feet. Second, if the deck is hot you can dip your feet in the water to cool off the deck. Finally, and most importantly, you can feel your line under your feet and minimize the chance of standing on your line. Then you can make the cast when you get a chance at a Pirarucu, Arowana or Monster Peacock.
With a few impressive down pours last week, the water levels on the Agua Boa River rose slightly with no noticeable change in water clarity, so the fishing has remained great. The line of choice continues to be the clear-tip tropical intermediate lines. These versatile lines allow the angler to fish deeper if needed and is suitable in the shallow areas in the river as well. However, we are not suggesting that you leave your floating lines at home. The popper fishing is still great and the floating lines suit that approach perfectly. Check out a shot of Dan Gorin with a nice peacock.
